Roads subject to tolls and compulsory vignette

In Hungary, motorways, highways and certain sections of main roads can only be used against payment of a road toll, meaning that an e-Vignette must be procured. Only certain road sections can be used free of charge (e.g. the entire length of Motorway M31).
As from 01.10.2008, the former paper vignette was replaced by an electronic vignette. The advantage of this new technology is that the e-vignette can be purchased online and is valid immediately if necessary. So there is no longer the need for posting the vignette and sticking it on the windscreen.
All the necessary vignette data such as the relevant validity and vehicle data are stored centrally by the toll operators and are immediately available to the authorities for control purposes.
The toll category is specified from the official entry in the registration certificate.

Note:

  • Vehicles in the other categories (lorries heavier than 3.5 t) must use the HU-GO system:
  • e-vignettes for specific administrative districts: Hungary is subdivided administratively into 20 regions, 19 so-called Comitats and the capital Budapest. In addition to the vignettes valid nationwide independent of time, regionally limited vignettes valid for one year can be purchased for vehicles of categories D1, D2, U and B2. The expressway network of a selected Comitat subject to tolls can be used with a Comitat vignette. Only vignettes valid for one year can be purchased for some Comitats, whereby several Comitat e-vignettes can be purchased for a vehicle. The validity area of the Comitat vignettes can be viewed by following this link: Please click here!

Observe: Unauthorised road use

Driving on a road section subject to tolls without a road use permit or without a valid permit is considered as unauthorised road usage.

The road-user authorisation is invalid if:

  • The fee category for the triggered authorisation is lower than the fee category for the inspected vehicle (with trailer);
  • The number plate stated on the counterfoil or the reconfirmation does not accord with the actual vehicle number plate.
  • The period of validity for the vignette has expired or has not yet begun.

The legal viability of the road use is confirmed by the counterfoil.

Did you know?

1. For what vehicles are vignettes compulsory?
Vignettes are compulsory for motorcycles and all motor vehicles up to a maximum admissible gross weight of 3.5 t, all campers and busses, as well as trailers towed by vehicles in toll categories D2 and B2.
2. Can I still buy an e-vignette for today?
Yes, a vignette becomes valid as from the time of booking. Otherwise, the vignette is invariably valid as from 00.00 h until 24.00 h. It is not possible to backdate a booking into the past.
3. Can I cancel an e-vignettte booking?
No, that is not possible.
4. Can I buy a short-term e-vignette for a Hungarian administration district (Comitat)?
No, e-vignettes for one administration district are only available as a one-year vignette.
5. What assistance does the motorway company customer service office provide?
The motorway company customer service office assists you if...
  • You have sold your vehicle and wish to transfer the road usage authorisation for your old vehicle onto the new one;
  • You have changed your number plate and wish to transfer the road usage authorisation for your old number plate onto the new one;
  • Your vehicle has been stolen or wrecked and you wish to transfer the road usage authorisation for your old vehicle onto a new or a different vehicle;
  • You have noticed that the fee category is incorrect and wish to have it put right;
  • You stated your license plate number wrongly and want to have that corrected (max. 3 deviating characters);
  • You have mislaid your counterfoil for confirmation of your authorisation, or the reconfirmation;
  • You have bought more than one vignette for the same period for a certain number plate.
You will find the motorway company customer service office here: www.toll-charge.hu
6. Can I buy a vignette for all my vehicles?
In principle, here you can buy a vignette for all your vehicles with a maximum gross weight of up to 3.5 t, busses and campers.

The accounting document for each booked e-vignette can be printed out at any time and also retroactively with regard to your orders in the myTolltickets section.
8. Must I carry the booking receipt / counterfoil for confirmation with me at all times?
Yes, in addition to the booking receipt / counterfoil for confirmation, you must always keep the registration certificate for the vehicle and the trailer with you. You must be able to produce all these documents for inspection.
9. Do I have to pay a fine if I don't have a valid vignette?
Yes, the fine can be as much as 267,700 HUF.
You will find the exact charges here: www.toll-charge.hu
10. I have a vowel mutation in my license number, such as "Ü" for instance. What is the correct way to enter my license number?
You should please always enter the license number in the same way it is printed on your license plate. Our system then adapts the license number according to what the toll operator requires so that it is always identified correctly.
