Buy Toll & Vignettes online | TOLLTICKETS
In Austria, all motor vehicles up to and including 3.5 t are required to display a vignette (which is either a paper toll sticker or an electronic vignette) on all freeways and expressways. Exceptions are sections with mileage-dependent tolling (special toll sections). For these freeway sections, an extra fee is incurred, which can be easily paid through the digital route toll or on site by credit card:
The following highway sections may be traveled without a vignette as of December 15, 2019:
Easily purchase your vignette for Austria online. For the section toll roads with special toll you can use the following link directly to the Austrian toll operator ASFINAG and buy a video toll card in advance:
Using the digital route toll, you can buy a ticket for any route and use it to drive through the open clearance lane or use the green marked lane. The lane is controlled by video. After your license plate has been recognized electronically, the barrier opens automatically.
The vignette for Austria can now be purchased in digital form and as an adhesive vignette. At tolltickets, the vignette for Austria is only available as an adhesive vignette. The digital vignettes for Austria cannot currently be purchased from tolltickets. The adhesive vignette has the advantage for private persons that it can be used immediately after receipt, whereas the digital vignette can be used at the earliest 18 days after ordering.
The digital annual vignettes have been available since November 5, 2020. This has the advantage that you no longer have to stick and scratch off the annual vignette for Austria. In addition, you have the option of buying the digital vignette for Austria at any time and regardless of location. This is a clear advantage for owners of interchangeable license plates; even in the event of a broken windshield.

The toll sticker is only valid if it is affixed to the inside of the windshield outside a tinting strip. An undamaged toll sticker provides proof of proper toll payment. The validity of a time-based toll depends on the period indicated on your ticket. Available are : 10-days, 2- months or 1-year vignettes. A cash fine of up to € 240 is levied if a vignette is not affixed. If the fine is not paid immediately on the spot, administrative penal proceedings will be initiated and which involve considerably higher costs (€ 300 – € 3.000).
You can purchase the digital route toll at tolltickets and thereby take advantage of the automatic check-in at the special toll stations. If you have purchased an adhesive annual toll sticker, you will receive a credit of €40 when you purchase an annual video toll card. For this you need the lower vignette section of your annual vignette! To do this, you must enter the bar code of a valid adhesive annual toll sticker in the input field. This code is located on the front of the lower section of the sticker. When you purchase the card, the license plate number of the passenger car is unlocked. As soon as you enter the automatic clearance lane with the registered vehicle, the license plate number is identified and you can pass the toll plaza without stopping.
Note: The video toll card functions in all open processing lanes! In addition, there are the lanes marked in green which are reserved exclusively for video toll. The video toll lane marked in green can only be used by cars without trailer and a maximum width of 2m. If a vehicle is not recognised by the system despite a valid video toll card during the vignette check (e.g. dirty number plate), you will be directed out to another open processing lane. You can also order the digital distance toll online while on the road. You always have your route toll ready on your cell phone. There is also the option of buying a digital vignette at vending machines at various rest stops and border crossings. Payment is cashless or by bank/credit card.
Vignettes are compulsory for all motor vehicles with a maximum gross vehicle weight (GVW) of up to and including 3.5t (cars, motor-homes, motorcycles). Vehicles with a maximum gross weight of more than 3.5t need a GO Box (lorries, busses and heavy motor-homes) which is available at so-called GO Stations. The obligation to pay tolls in Austria begins immediately at the state border.
A motorcycle with a sidecar is considered as one single track vehicle. Only one motorcycle vignette is needed for these vehicles.
Trailers pulled by a motor vehicle with a maximum gross vehicle weight (GVW) up to and including 3.5t do not need an additional vignette or a GO Box. One valid and properly affixed vignette on the drawing vehicle is sufficient.
After removing the carrier foil, the vignette must be affixed undamaged and directly on the inside of the windscreen where it can be easily seen and controlled from the outside (e.g. not stuck on behind a dark tinted strip). It is not permitted to stick the vignette on the side window. Special foils, suction cups, adhesive tapes etc. may not be used to affix a vignette. This kind of manipulation renders the evidence of orderly toll payment null and void. The vignette is thus invalid and a high fine must be expected. Simply carrying a vignette in the vehicle is only admissible in the special cases stipulated in the Toll Regulations (Section A I, Item 7).
If a vignette already affixed to the windscreen is removed again, the security feature “invalid” appears on the vignette. The vignette cannot be affixed again.
The law does not stipulate the precise place where the vignette should be affixed on the windscreen. The valid vignette can be placed anywhere on the windscreen (not in tinted strips) as long as it is duly properly affixed. The illustration on the back of the vignette is a recommendation by ASFINAG.
With single track vehicles the vignette must be stuck where it is easily visible on a flat part which cannot be removed or can only be removed with difficulty. Care must be taken to ensure that the surface is clean before sticking on the vignette (dust, oil and wax residue etc. must be removed before sticking on the vignette).
The lower vignette section (Allonge) may not be affixed with the vignette, but it must be kept safely. With 1-year vignettes, for instance, it is needed if the windscreen breaks or when buying a 1-year card for a stretch of road subject to a special toll.
Yes, compliance with the vignette obligation is monitored by the ASFINAG toll supervision, the executive and by the so-called “automatic vignette checks” (an automated camera system) throughout all Austria.
No, because the decisions to buy the vignette and which type, as well as the risk this involves, rests entirely with the buyer.
Yes, because the law stipulates that the vignette is bound to the vehicle and not to the registration. A new vignette must be purchased for the new vehicle if this changes.
Yes, a vignette is also compulsory at service stations which can be accessed not only from the motorway.
You can only get a replacement of a 1-year vignette. For instance, if the windscreen breaks you must submit the detached original vignette together with the bottom vignette section and a copy of the workshop invoice to ASFINAG. The detailled rules for replacing the vignette are listed in the Toll Regulations which can be downloaded at
All three-wheeled motor vehicles (e.g. Trikes) require a motorcycle vignette. Quads require a normal vignette for passenger cars.
Have the vignette sent conveniently to your home before you travel and avoid queuing at the outlets. Your journey through Austria will be much more relaxed and there is no need to worry about toll charges.
