All motor vehicles up to and including 3.5t are obligated to have a vignette in Slovenia.
The vignette obligation applies on all motorways and expressways in the Republic of Slovenia managed by the motorway operating company DARS d.d. A vignette is required for single-track motor vehicles (motorcycles) and two-track motor vehicles with or without trailers, the maximum authorised weight of which does not exceed 3.5 tonnes.
The vignette obligation also applies on the route Spielfeld – Maribor and even for the motorway section via Koper. Driving through the Karawanken Tunnel is not included in the vignette price and a separate toll must be paid here. Since 1st April 2018, vehicles above 3.5 t maximum gross vehicle weight (GVW) require a “DarsGo unit” box. This also applies to RVs of this weight class. More information can be found on www.darsgo.si.
As of 1.2.2022, Slovenia has discontinued the sale of paper vignettes and replaced them with electronic vignettes. These are currently only available directly from the sales offices of the authority. You can find more information here.

The first day of validity of the “1 month vignette” for vehicles in categories 2A and 2B as well as the “6 months vignette” for motorcycles must be the same as the day of purchase and thus also the day of dispatch from tolltickets.
In Slovenia, the vehicle category depends on the height of the vehicle measured on the first axle and the number of axles of the vehicle (with trailer). Certain vehicle categories are assigned to the according toll categories (toll category 2A, 2B or 1).
A valid undamaged vignette affixed in an untinted area on the left hand side of the windscreen interior is the only acceptable substantiation that the toll has been duly paid. The validity depends on the period indicated on the toll ticket. Day, month or year vignettes are available.A cash fine starting from € 300 and as much as € 800 is imposed if a vignette is not affixed, if a forged vignette is used or if a vehicle is driven without a vignette.
DARS, the Slovenian vignette operating organisation, informs us that the current toll regime rules that the first day of validity of the 1-month vignette for vehicles of categories 2A and 2B and of the 6-month vignette for motorbikes must be the same as the day of purchase! In order to prevent a misunderstanding at vignette checkpoints, we suggest that you have our vignette delivery note with you at all times. The delivery note clearly shows the day of delivery, the vignette’s serial number, and the price.
Please use the yellow lanes on the motorway at the toll stations.
Vignettes are compulsory for all motor vehicles with a maximum gross vehicle weight (GVW) up to and including 3.5t (cars, motor-homes, motorcycles). Vehicles with a maximum gross weight more than 3.5 t (lorries, busses and heavy motor-homes) must pay tolls depending on distance travelled. In case of any problems, please read the document at the following link:
Trailers towed by a motor vehicle with a maximum gross vehicle weight (GVW) of up to and including 3.5t do not need an extra vignette. One valid, properly affixed vignette on the drawing vehicle is sufficient.
After removing the carrier foil, the vignette must be affixed undamaged and directly on the inside of the windscreen where it can be easily seen and controlled from the outside (e.g. not stuck on behind a dark tinted strip). It is not permitted to stick the vignette on the side window. An old vignette must be removed before affixing a new one. Special foils, suction cups, adhesive tapes etc. may not be used to affix a vignette. This kind of manipulation renders the evidence of orderly toll payment null and void. The vignette is thus invalid and a high fine must be expected. Simply carrying a vignette in the vehicle is only admissible in the special cases stipulated in the Toll Regulations (Section A I, Item 7).
With single track vehicles the vignette must be stuck where it is easily visible on a flat part which cannot be removed or can only be removed with difficulty. Care must be taken to ensure that the surface is clean (dust, oil and wax residue etc. must be removed before sticking on the vígnette).
If a vignette already affixed to the windscreen is removed again, the security feature “neveljano” (invalid) appears on the vignette. The vignette cannot be affixed again.
No, the vignette must be affixed on the left hand inside of the windscreen. The vignette may not be affixed to a side window of the vehicle. An old or invalid vignette must be removed from the windscreen.
The lower vignette section (Allonge) should not be affixed with the vignette. But it is very important to keep it safely for as long as the vignette is valid.
Proper use of the vignette is controlled by the motorway company of Slovenia (DARS d.d.), the Slovenian traffic inspection authorities, the Slovenian customs authorities and police.
No, the sales outlets are not allowed to take back issued vignettes.
Yes, because the vignette is bound to the vehicle and not the registration.
It is only possible to get a replacement vignette if a damaged windscreen or motorcycle part had to be replaced or if the vehicle has been deregistered. A written application must be submitted for a replacement vignette. The detached vignette on which the validity period can be seen must be enclosed with the application. If the validity period is not visible, then the purchase voucher must be enclosed. A copy of the workshop invoice is also needed. You can find more precise information and application forms at www.dars.si . A replacement is only possible through DARS d.d.
No, the ABC card has been replaced by the vignette.
Have the vignette sent conveniently to you at home before you travel and avoid queuing at the toll stations. Attach them to your vehicle directly before departure and do not worry about paying tolls. This will make your journey through Slovenia much more relaxed.
